This watercolor class is all about helping you unlock your inner creativity and discovering ways to make your watercolor paintings unique. If you struggle with painting loosely in watercolors, let me show you how to loosen up and have some fun creating interesting watercolors that leave things for the eye to interpret. I will paint two watercolor demonstrations of the same subject - one leaving some white space on the paper and one covering the paper entirely, and leave it up to you as to which you prefer. At the end of the course I also will include a few videos on interesting ways to create texture in your watercolors that will help you become a more creative watercolor artist. We are only going to use three colors for this course, which will create harmony in your work.
Work at your own pace with unlimited access at anytime.
The course includes
- Discovering the possibilities of wet-in-wet painting
- Learning to let go and be spontaneous
- Using washes
- Uncovering your inner creativity
- Using warm and cool colors for important contrasts
You will also have the ability to upload a photo of your finished artwork if you would like feedback on your watercolor.

The luminosity of watercolors is what fascinates and draws me to this medium. I like creating textures and continually try to stretch the boundaries of watercolor. I experiment with materials and media to get the results I want.
I studied painting at the Rhodesian School of Art in Zimbabwe and for four years in California with master watercolorist, Jerry Stitt, AWS.
Frequently Asked Questions
I have been searching for a watercolor teacher whose aesthetic is similar to mine....kind of abstract and loose. Finding Jean Lurssen was truly a gift from the gods! Her explanations, techniques and pacing of the course were perfect and listening to her lovely accent and her calm delivery of the content was mesmerizing! The key element that I will take into my own work is to let the watercolor paint run free. I am reminded of a quote ....unfortunately I can't remember who said it....he was not referring to watercolor but it certainly applies..."Don't push the river....it flows by itself". Thank you Jean for sharing your amazing talent and please know how much you have inspired me!!!!

Jean is a great teacher whose explanations are crystal clear. The videos are well-done where you can see exactly what she means. Her accent is lovely. My husband said "I love that lady's voice" as he heard me taking the course. She is inspiring without being emotional. She breaks it all down for you, making it easy to try the techniques that she teaches. And I feel I can now use the techniques she taught on thistle flowers and apply it in a variety of ways in further watercolor work. Highly recommended!

What a fun course. I admire the loose experimental style of Jean Lurssen's paintings, and some of the ways she creates her effects are presented very clearly in this course. Her style reminds me somewhat of the work of Ann Blockley, whose books I own and enjoy. The books don't provide any direct guidance, though, as this course does. Also, the techniques used here are perfectly suited to render this subject (thistles), but the results will be a bit different for everyone, I'm sure. I will be experimenting with these "loose" methods in future paintings of my own.

What a soothing voice! I truly enjoyed this course it was explained thoroughly with extra tips that I was grateful to learn. I really can't think of anything that needs to be improved upon as the instructions given were easy to follow.

The instructor was very informative, personable and relaxed. She obviously loves painting and because she is so relaxed, it helps you to relax also, which translates into a looser painting style for the student.
